David Cake has been active in a number of community and political organisations in addition to EFA, including bur.st networking Inc., the League for Programming Freedom Australia, and the Australian Labor Party.

He has had an email address since 1989, and been employed in the computer industry since 1991. Since 2000 he has been computer consultant with his own consulting company, Difference Engineering, and has worked in a wide range of software development and system administration related roles over the years, with special interests in digital media and web application development.

Other interests include being an editor of small press magazine Borderlands, and very active involvement in science fiction fandom. He has also recently threatened to start a record company. David has been a board member of EFA since 2004, and secretary since 2005.
