There are millions of them around the world. They're well educated, wealthy and they vote. They're the users of the internet, and now they have their own political platform - The Technology Pledge.

The Australian Technology Pledge (OzPledge) has been adapted by Electronic Frontiers Australia for use in the forthcoming Australian federal election. It was based on one created by US based activists to allow citizens to assess how candidates in the US 1996 elections stand on critical issues where technology policy affects civil liberties and privacy in the on-line world.

"With the forthcoming federal election, this seemed the best time to launch OzPledge here in Australia", said Kimberley Heitman, Chairperson of Electronic Frontiers Australia. "The OzPledge covers the issues of internet content regulation, public access to government information, electronic commerce and market-driven cryptography", he continued.

The OzPledge simply asks for candidates (or their political party) to declare their position on:

"All political parties and many independant candidates will be asked to participate in this program and results will be posted on the world wide web and via aus.org.efa and other newsgroups", Mr Heitman said.

The OzPledge can be found on the world wide web at http://www.efa.org.au/pledge/.
