It's the total secrecy that makes it so dangerous. Without the list being leaked how many more legal sites would end up on it? How far would the creep go? If the gov thought they could get away with it they would expand the list in the most ridiculous way and we'd find ourselves living in a country we don't recognise. I know we don't really have free speech here in Oz, but who would have thought we lived in a country where the gov had the ability to censor based on political sensitivity? A constituent starts lobbying the gov about an issue being 'just wrong' and next thing you know it disappears from the net?????? A lot of the material on that list is distasteful, but I could avoid it and anyone who actually spends time with and interacts with and supervises their children can too. This is more about parents being able to get down time away from their kids (at least they're quiet when they're on the computer) than real danger on the net. All said before, adding my 2c.

All someone would have to do to avoid detection is use a VPN that purges the logs after a couple of days, then use disk-wiping software to wipe the evidence off your hard disk, and that would be the end of that.

Make no mistake, Conroy didn't invent this policy nor is responsible for continuing this silly pursuit. It's da boss's doing. It all ends when KRudd says so- and it's KRudd and Labor in general who should be taking the heat, both now and at the ballot box if a backflip isn't forthcoming.

"Any charges laid against the public would most likely be laid under statutes targeting the distribution of child-abuse material (as opposed to, say, a law safeguarding Government secrets). There are many uncertainties in this area of law. Definitions of child-abuse material can vary, and it is not entirely clear that a list of links might not qualify. Certainly, a prosecutor could argue that distributing the list constitutes “making available” such material."

In using ACMA to originally publish the blacklist, aren't the government themselves guilty of distributing child-abuse material?

I'm hosting a mirror in case wikileaks goes down again <a href="http://ozsoapbox.com/melbourne/wikileaks-wages-war-against-acma-and-conroy/" rel="nofollow">here</a>.

This most recent leaks of the blacklist from the 11th March 2009 and 18th March 2009 highlight the requirement for a notification and review/appeal process.

If wikileaks hadn't leaked this then an Australian dental business would still be on the list blocklist of at least one filter vendor. If mandatory internet censorship was in place this Australian small business would have been blocked for all Australian internet users.

Stop internet censorship!

A more updated list has been released.

"All three lists come from the same Australian Communications and Media Authority approved filtering software company source and described internally as the "ACMA" list."

"A big "sanitisation", following bad press over dentists and others being on the ACMA list. It's probable that the company only added, but never previously deleted, sites from the updates sent by ACMA."
